Description

EMIR, the common user  near-infrared camera and multiobject spectrograph in the GTC, is currently in operation  in the middle of its Scientific Verification phase, and has recently been offered to the user community for the 2017B semester  in long slit spectroscopy and image modes. EMIR has been built by a consortium led by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) and of which the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de l'Observatoire de Midi-Pyrénées (LAOMP, Toulouse) and the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille-Provence (OAMP) are the main partners. All the high-level requirements have been met both in the acceptance in the IAC and during the commissioning in GTC, and the first observations are demonstrating the ability of EMIR to produce scientific results of impact in the GTC.
In this project we request funding to undertake four main objectives, all focused on the adjustment and improvement of the operation of the EMIR instrument in the GTC:
The PI of the project is the Principal Investigator of EMIR and the members of the research team are, in turn, the technical team of the instrument. They have, therefore, the experience and capacity necessary to carry out the project.

EMIR - Multi-object Infrared Spectrograph

EMIR is a wide-field camera and intermediate resolution near infrared spectrograph. It is a criogenic multi-object spectrograph installed and in operation in the GTC telescope. A criogenic robotic reconfigurable slit system allows to obtain spectra from up to 50 objects simultaneously.
