Description
The IAC (Tenerife) announces ONE postdoctoral contract to work on topics within the projects LSPE-STRIP (P/301503) and “Precision Cosmology with the CMB” (AYA2017-84185-P), led at the IAC by Dr. José Alberto Rubiño-Martin.
Research topics at the IAC cover most fields of astrophysics, including solar physics, planetary systems, stellar and interstellar physics, formation and evolution of galaxies, and cosmology and astroparticles. These fields are supported by an ambitious instrumentation programme. In 2015, the IAC was granted by the Spanish Government the status of Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence for research; it is the second time that this prestigious honour has been awarded to the IAC as a leading Spanish research centre. For further information on the IAC's research programme, observatories, and the GTC 10.4 m telescope consult the IAC's website (http://www.iac.es).
Tasks: The successful candidate will pursue research related to the following fields:
- Participation in the LSPE-STRIP experiment dedicated to measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. Contribute to the preparation of the commissioning phase and measurement campaign at the Teide Observatory. Preparation of joint analysis of the STRIP and QUIJOTE data sets.
- Study of the atmospheric effects expected in the STRIP data, optimization of the STRIP observation strategy for atmospheric measurements. Preparation of a joint analysis of QUIJOTE and STRIP atmospheric data. Analysis of the atmospheric contribution using the first data of the STRIP experiment. Multi-frequency correlations, comparison with theoretical atmospheric models.
- Preparation to joint analysis of STRIP and QUIJOTE astrophysical data. Cross-correlation of the maps of the two experiments, in the same areas of the sky. Study of the contribution of polarized synchrotron foreground and other foregrounds. Component separation techniques and extraction of the common signal.
- Characterization of the beam pattern of the QUIJOTE and STRIP experiments using drone-mounted receivers at the observing site. Optimization of the beam measurement strategy and data analysis. Comparison with optical modeling and scientific implications.
- Participation in the commissioning of the STRIP experiment, analysis of the first-light data in Q and W band. Characterization of the instrument noise properties, optical quality. Assessment of systematic effects: local interferences, ground spillover, side-lobe pickup, leakage from intensity to polarization. Calibration with celestial sources.
- Act as a contact between the IAC group and the rest of the STRIP collaboration.
- Scientific and technical contributions to the field of research.
- Scientific publications, in both quantity and quality, as listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI); contributions to conferences; teaching tasks; scientific activity committees, conference scientific organizing committees, organization of conferences, journal refereeing, and stays at other centres.
- The time passed since the award of the candidate's doctorate will be taken into account in the consideration of merits.
- Expertise in instrument characterization, data reduction, data processing and/or data analysis of CMB experiments, or in general, of radio and/or sub-mm telescopes.
- Expertise with the analysis and management of large data sets.
- Physics of Galactic foregrounds (thermal dust, synchrotron, spinning dust), including their polarization. Physics of the CMB polarization.
- Statistical tools for the analysis and exploitation of CMB data. Component separation techniques and cross-correlation tools.
- Standard CMB software packages, like HEALPix. Expertise in coding up software for the analysis and exploitation of CMB data.
- Up to 10 points will correspond to the adaptation of the candidate's professional profile to the post advertised.
- Up to 10 points will correspond to the candidate's vision of the future and scientific development in the post applied for.
- If there is disequilibrium in the distribution of posts according to sex in the unit responsible for advertising the post such that women occupy less than 40% of the existing posts, the first criterion will award the post advertised to the woman.
- If there is a draw among persons of the same sex, or if the distribution is balanced, in the case of a draw, the stalemate will be resolved in favour of the candidate who obtained the highest score in the second phase ('presentation by the candidate').
- If the draw persists, recourse will be made to the score awarded for merits in part a) of the first phase. Should the situation of a draw still persist, recourse will be made to part b) of the first phase.
- Application form (Annex I, duly filled in and signed, including the correct name and code of the post offered).
- Copy of national identity document or passport (it must coincide with the number included in Annex I).
- CV, containing list of publications
- Report on research activity and justification of suitability for the post (not exceeding 2 pages)
- Copy of the Doctoral degree or certified proof of being in possession of a doctorate (in Spanish or English)
