  • Shakhbazian compact galaxy groups. IV. Photometric and spectroscopic study of ShCG 8, ShCG 14 ShCG 19, ShCG 22
We present the results of a detailed spectroscopic and photometric study of four Shakhbazian compact groups: ShCG 8, ShCG 14, ShCG 19, and ShCG 22. We determined the redshifts of member galaxies and radial velocity dispersions of groups. We also studied the distribution of the surface brightness of member galaxies in R and determined their

  • Shocked excitation in the bipolar nebula CRL 618
Intermediate-long-slit spectroscopy of the protoplanetary-nebula candidate CRL 618, obtained using an IPCS on the 2.5-m telescope at the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos, are reported. The data are presented in plots of forbidden N II (6548 + 6584 A) vs H-alpha and compared with the predictions of theoretical models. Best agreement is found with

  • Short-duration high-amplitude flares detected on the M dwarf star KIC 5474065
Using data obtained during the RATS-Kepler project, we identified one short-duration flare in a 1 h sequence of ground-based photometry of the dwarf star KIC 5474065. Observations made using Gran Telescopio Canarias show that it is a star with an M4V spectral type. Kepler observations made using 1 min sampling show that KIC 5474065 exhibits large

  • Short-lived radioactivity in the early solar system: The Super-AGB star hypothesis
The composition of the most primitive solar system condensates, such as calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) and micron-sized corundum grains, show that short-lived radionuclides (SLR), e.g., 26Al, were present in the early solar system. Their abundances require a local or stellar origin, which, however, is far from being understood. We present

  • Shortwave forcing of the Earth's climate: Modern and historical variations in the Sun's irradiance and the Earth's reflectance
Changes in the Earth's radiation budget are driven by changes in the balance between the thermal emission from the top of the atmosphere and the net sunlight absorbed. The shortwave radiation entering the climate system depends on the Sun's irradiance and the Earth's reflectance. Often, studies replace the net sunlight by proxy measures of solar

  • Signatures of Incomplete Paschen-Back Splitting in the Polarization Profiles of the He I λ10830 Multiplet
We investigate the formation of polarization profiles induced by a magnetic field in the He I multiplet at 10830 Å. Our analysis considers the Zeeman splitting in the incomplete Paschen-Back regime. The effects turn out to be important and produce measurable signatures on the profiles, even for fields significantly weaker than the level-crossing
