Description

The IAC (Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for SIX PhD fellowships in Astrophysics.

1.- Astrophysical Research (5 contracts)

2.- Astrophysical Instrumentation (1 contract)

Candidates can only apply to one of the specialities (1 or 2). In case the speciality 2 didn’t reach a final selected candidate, there will be six contracts for speciality 1

The research topics pursued at the IAC include most areas of Astrophysics: Solar Physics, Planetary Systems, Stellar and Interstellar Physics, Galaxy Formation and Evolution, and Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. These are supported by an ambitious instrumentation programme.  The IAC has been selected as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellencein research by the Spanish Government. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its Observatories and the 10.4 m telescope GTC is available on the IAC's Web site (http://www.iac.es/).

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), welcomes and supports the Recommendation of the European Commission 2005/251/EC of March 11th 2005 on “The European Charter for Researchers” and “The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers” adopted by the European Commission. Both documents are nowadays key elements of the European Union policy for making research an attractive career and stimulating economic growth and employment in Europe.

During 2017, IAC has made a deep analysis about the "HR Strategy for Researchers" (HRS4R) fostered by the European Commission and its possible implementation at the IAC. HRS4R is a mechanism to support the implementation of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (C&C).

The outcome of that process is a GAP-Analysis and Action Plan for 2018-2019. After this process, the IAC has been awarded the "HR Excellence in Research" logo and recognition by the European Commission. We are now in the Implementation Phase of the Action Plan.

The successful candidates will work at the IAC's headquarters in La Laguna, (Tenerife) in a stimulating research environment. They will be expected to join one of the IAC's research groups and work towards obtaining a PhD.

Qualifications: To be considered, applicants must have a degree in Physics or Mathematics dor speciality 1 and Physics or Engineering for speciality 2.

The mark obtained in the degree must be 7.0 points (on a scale of 1 to 10) or higher in the case of applicants whose degree is presented as a bachelor's degree, and 7.5 points for the master, in the case of those applicants, whose degree presented is Bachelor + Master.

The degree must satisfy the admission requirements of the University of La Laguna (ULL) PhD Programme in astrophysics, in which the student must register. The ULL requirements are satisfied by applicants with an MSc, as well as by those students with an Undergraduate Degree who have already obtained at least 300 credits (ETCs) of which at least 60 credits should correspond to an MSc Degree (other ways to fulfil the ULL requirements are possible; see the ULL website for details).

The undergraduate or MSc degree required to register in the ULL PhD Programme must have been obtained on or since January 31, 2017.

Duration: The IAC will offer four year contracts that are yearly renewable following the recommendation of the Head of the Graduate Studies Division, on the basis of a positive evaluation of the student’s annual progress report and activity plan by the Graduate Students Division  Board of the IAC.

Students obtaining their PhD within three years will not be renewed as PhD students for their fourth year. Instead, a one further year, Postdoctoral Training Period contract, will be offered to them. These contracts will have a significant salary increase and are intended to offer the new doctors a bridge between their studentships and the postdoctoral phase of their careers.

The successful PhD candidates will take up their position at IAC on a date to be determined, after October 15th, 2020.

Remuneration:

•  Each Pre-doctoral yearly contract (up to four years)..…………………………….19.090,56 euros.
