Deep Gemini GMOS IFU Spectroscopy of BAL + IR + Fe II QSOsÂ

Description
In this work we present the first results of a study of BAL QSOs (at low and high redshift), based on very deep Gemini GMOS integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy. In particular, new Gemini results obtained for the nearest BAL IR-QSO Mrk 231 are presented. The very deep Gemini GMOS 3D spectra clearly show that the BAL I system (in the lines Na ID, He I, and Ca II) is extended, reaching ~ 1.4-1.8 kpc. This result was confirmed using a new technique of decoupling three-dimensional (3D) spectra. Specifically, the QSO and host-galaxy components -of the nuclear region of Mrk 231- were modelled. The BAL system I is observed in the spectrum of the host galaxy, i.e.: which confirms the extended morphology. The composite/young nature of Mrk 231 and BAL IR QSOs is discussed. Specifically, a composite hyper-wind scenario is proposed for the origins of some BALs and giant blobs, at low and high redshift (following the main results obtained for IRAS04505-2958).
