  • Multiwavelength Correlations in V404 Cyg in Quiescence
We report simultaneous X-ray, optical, and radio observations of V404 Cyg in quiescence. The X-ray flux varied dramatically by a factor of >20 during a 60 ks observation. X-ray variations were well correlated with those in Hα , although the latter include an approximately constant component as well. Correlations can also be seen with the optical

  • Mysteries of Mass: Some Contrarian Views From an Experimenter
Physics and astronomy are the oldest sciences and the concept of mass is thus a very old concept. We have quite good understanding of the masses of composite elementary particles such as protons using quantum chromodynamics. But we do not understand the nature of the masses of the elementary particles - quarks, leptons, force carrying particles

  • NAHUAL: and Infrared Spectrograph for Exoplanet Research at the GTC
NAHUAL is a high-resolution, near-infrared, echelle spectrograph designed for high-precision radial velocity measurements using the Gran Telescopio Canarias in La Palma. The current status of NAHUAL will be presented, as well as the prospects for the parameter space in exoplanet research that it could cover.

  • Narrow band Hα photometry of the super-Earth GJ 1214b with GTC/OSIRIS tunable filters
Aims: The super-Earth planet GJ 1214b has recently been the focus of several studies, which use the transit spectroscopy technique to determine the nature of its atmosphere. Here, we focus on the Hα line as a tool to further restrict the nature of GJ 1214b's atmosphere. Methods: We used the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) OSIRIS instrument to

  • Near-barrier Fusion Induced by Stable Weakly Bound and Exotic Halo Light Nuclei
The effect of breakup is investigated for the medium weight 6Li+59Co system in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. The strong coupling of breakup/transfer channels to fusion is discussed within a comparison of predictions of the Continuum Discretized Coupled-Channels model which is also applied to 6He+59Co a reaction induced by the borromean halo
