  • On the Origin of Lopsidedness in Galaxies as Determined from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G)
We study the m = 1 distortions (lopsidedness) in the stellar components of 167 nearby galaxies that span a wide range of morphologies and luminosities. We confirm the previous findings of (1) a high incidence of lopsidedness in the stellar distributions, (2) increasing lopsidedness as a function of radius out to at least 3.5 exponential scale

  • On The Parent Population of Radio Galaxies and the FR I-FR II Dichotomy
We test the hypothesis that radio galaxies are a random subset of otherwise normal elliptical galaxies. Starting with the observed optical luminosity functions for elliptical galaxies, we show that the probability of an elliptical forming a radio source is a continuous, increasing function of optical luminosity, proportional to L2+/-0.4. With this

  • On the Possible Existence of Short-Period g-Mode Instabilities Powered by Nuclear-Burning Shells in Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch H-Deficient (PG1159-Type) Stars
We present a pulsational stability analysis of hot post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) H-deficient pre-white dwarf stars with active He-burning shells. The stellar models employed are state-of-the-art equilibrium structures representative of PG1159 stars derived from the complete evolution of the progenitor stars, through the thermally pulsing AGB

  • On the Size and Luminosity versus Velocity Dispersion Correlations from the Giant H II Regions in the Irregular Galaxy NGC 4449
Here we present the size and luminosity versus velocity dispersion empirical correlations for the giant H II regions in the large irregular galaxy NGC 4449. We show that correlations only hold for nebulae with a surface brightness higher than 2×1035 ergs s-1 pc-2 in Hα and with a supersonic single-line Gaussian profile. The exponents of the fits
