  • Optical spectroscopy as a monitor of thin film growth in sputtering
Line intensity ratio has been used in astronomy to calculate plasma density and temperature. This procedure is applied to monitor thin film growth in plasma-assisted deposition, it provides very useful information such as density and temperature of the plasma. The propose of this study is monitor variations of the plasma during deposition, using

  • Optical spectroscopy of candidate Alpha Persei white dwarfs
As part of an investigation into the high-mass end of the initial mass-final mass relation we performed a search for new white dwarf members of the nearby (172.4 pc), young (80-90 Myr) α Persei open star cluster. The photometric and astrometric search using the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey and SuperCOSMOS sky

  • Optical Survey of Post-AGB Candidates
Over the past 12 years we have been conducting a survey of IRAS (PSC) sources with dust temperatures between 100 and 250 K, which is the temperature of AGB shells after mass loss has ceased. About 1000 PSC sources fulfill this criterion, about half of them identified previously in the literature: most are PNe (49%) and post-AGB stars (27%), but

  • Orbit-based dynamical models of the Sculptor dSph galaxy
We have developed spherically symmetric dynamical models of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies using Schwarzschild's orbit superposition method. This type of modelling yields constraints both on the total mass distribution (e.g. enclosed mass and scale radius) and on the orbital structure of the system (e.g. velocity anisotropy). This method is thus

  • Orbital and quasi-periodic optical variations in the black hole X-ray binary V404 CYG
We present 2 weeks of CCD photometry of V404 Cyg, the optical counterpart of the soft X-ray transient (SXT) GS 2023+338, taken from La Palma in 1992 July. The R-band light curve shows a clear 0.3-mag ellipsoidal modulation on the estabished 6.5-d orbital period, but with substantial (up to 0.3 mag) superposed variations that occur during each night

  • Orbital elements, masses and distance of λ Scorpii A and B determined with the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer and high-resolution spectroscopy
The triple system HD158926 (λSco) has been observed interferometrically with the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer, and the elements of the wide orbit have been determined. These are significantly more accurate than the previous elements found spectroscopically. The inclination of the wide orbit is consistent with the inclination previously
