  • Probing the structure and size of the NLR in AGN with radio jets
We have selected a sample of 55 kpc-sized flat spectrum radio sources from the JVAS/CLASS1 surveys which contain about 4800 objects. Optical (photometry and spectroscopy) and higher resolution radio follow ups are being carried out. Our sample is characterized by objects dominated by radio emission on kpc scales and splits, morphologically, into

  • Progress on smart focal plane technologies for extremely large telescopes
A key instrument for an Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is likely to be multi-object spectrometer which observes at least 100 discrete sources with diffraction limited spatial resolution and moderate spectral resolution in the wavelength region from 1.0 to 2.5 μm. Such an instrument has been chosen as the principal driver for the Smart Focal Planes

  • Projection effects in the spectra of early-type pulsating stars
The relation between the surface velocity of a pulsating star in the star's inertial frame and the apparent expansion velocity measured by a remote observer has been classically formulated in terms of a projection factor p. This factor depends on the relative limb darkening in continuum and spectral lines and may therefore be a function of

  • Proper Motions and Velocity Asymmetries in the RW Aur Jet
We present adaptive optics spectro-imaging observations of the RW Aur jet in optical forbidden lines, at an angular resolution of 0.4″. Comparison with HST data taken 2 yr later shows that proper motions in the blueshifted and redshifted lobes are in the same ratio as their radial velocities, a direct proof that the velocity asymmetry in this jet

  • Properties of an H I-selected galaxy sample
We analyze the properties of a sample of galaxies identified in a 21cm, H I-line survey of selected areas in the Perseus-Pisces supercluster and its foreground void. Twelve fields were observed in the supercluster, five of them (target fields) centered on optically bright galaxies, and the other seven (blank fields) selected to contain no bright
