  • Extended soft X-ray emission in 3CR radio galaxies at z < 0.3: high excitation and broad line galaxies
We analyze Chandra observations of diffuse soft X-ray emission associated with a complete sample of 3CR radio galaxies at z 0.3. We focus on the properties of the spectroscopic sub-classes of high excitation galaxies (HEGs) and broad line objects (BLOs). Among the 33 HEGs we detect extended (or possibly extended) emission in about 40% of the

  • Extending the baseline: Spitzer mid-infrared photometry of globular cluster systems in the Centaurus A and Sombrero Galaxies
Spitzer IR Array Camera (IRAC) mid-infrared photometry is presented for the globular cluster (GC) systems of the NGC 5128 (`Centaurus A') and NGC 4594 (`Sombrero') galaxies. Existing optical photometric and spectroscopic are combined with this new data in a comprehensive optical-to-mid-IR colour catalogue of 260 GCs. Empirical colour-metallicity

  • Extensions of Virasoro group and Virasoro algebra by modules of tensor-densities on $S^1$
We classify non-trivial (non-central) extensions of the group $Diff^+(S^1)$ of all diffeomorphisms of the circle preserving its orientation and of the Lie algebra $Vect (S^1)$ of vector fields on $S^1$, by the modules of tensor-densities on $S^1$. The result is: 4 non-trivial extensions of $Diff^+(S^1)$ and 7 non-trivial extensions of $Vect (S^1)$

  • Extragalactic Stellar Spectroscopy
The advent of large 8-10m telescopes heralds a new age in stellar astronomy. It is now possible to carry out detailed spectroscopic observations at high resolution of the brightest stars of galaxies in the Local Group, and it is envisaged that intermediate resolution observations will be extended to stars in the nearest galaxy clusters such as

  • Extreme value theory and the solar cycle
Aims:We investigate the statistical properties of the extreme events of the solar cycle as measured by the sunspot number. Methods: The recent advances in the methodology of the theory of extreme values are applied to the maximal extremes of the time series of sunspots. We focus on the extreme events that exceed a carefully chosen threshold and a
