  • High-resolution observations of interstellar NA I and K I absorptions towards giants within 200 PC from the sun
The first results of a program of observations designed to probe the structure and kinematics of the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) using the Queen's University of Belfast Echelle Spectrograph (QUBES) on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope are reported. The observations show the potential of the instrument for measuring small column densities

  • High-sensitivity measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum with the extended Very Small Array
We present deep Ka-band (ν~ 33 GHz) observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) made with the extended Very Small Array (VSA). This configuration produces a naturally weighted synthesized FWHM beamwidth of ~11 arcmin, which covers an l range of 300 to 1500. On these scales, foreground extragalactic sources can be a major source of

  • High-velocity outflows in post-Main-Sequence nebulae
Observations of three post-Main-Sequence nebulae, taken with an intermediate dispersion spectrograph mounted on the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (La Palma, Spain), are presented. The results reveal evidence for high-velocity outflows of about 100 km/s in the primary shells, and very much greater velocities in the cores, while in one unique source

  • Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics III
This volume documents the contributions presented at the 5th Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA). Covering a wide range of topics, the 154 contributed papers give a comprehensive overview of the current state of Spanish astronomy. The Proceedings include special reviews by Dr. V. Trimble and other experts dealing with the

  • Hot Horizontal Branch Stars in ω Centauri: Clues about their Origin from the Cluster Color Magnitude Diagram
We investigate a peculiar feature at the hottest, blue end of the horizontal branch of Galactic globular cluster ω Centauri, using the high-precision and nearly complete catalog that has been constructed from a survey taken with the Advanced Camera for Survey on board the Hubble Space Telescope, that covers the inner 10 × 10 arcmin. It is a densely
