PARSEC is an unique project in the astronomy community committed to the dual effort of maximum angular resolution -parsec-, maximum spectral coverage, and time simultaneity, in the study of the centre of galaxies. The systematic use of these observation constraints has allowed PARSEC to full fill its main goal, i.e. to isolate the core emission of a galaxy at any wavelength and range of BH accretion powers, from overlapping emission sources. This in turn has allowed us to pursue our main science goal: to explore the physics laws by which a galaxy nucleus and its Super Massive Black Hole (BH) mutate from an active to a progressively quiescent phase. As part of its multidisciplinary nature, PARSEC and this PI are as of 2000 fostering the development of Adaptive Optics (AO) instrumentation in Spain: first, with the first AO design proposal for the GTC; second, with FRIDA, the design and construction of the first AO imaging camera and integral unit for GTC - foreseen at the telescope in 2025. PARSEC - IAC is leading the system-, control-, software-, and detector- engineering of FRIDA. First light is foreseen in 2025. Building on our multi-wavelength expertise, PARSEC is contributing to the outreach of Astronomy by sharing our analysis tools and data with the general public. We do so through the VASCO-Citizen web page, press releases of PARSEC results led by this PI, and the popular Jornadas Astronomicas de Almeria, organized yearly by co-PI J. Beckman.
With this proposal, we aim at the execution of 4 objectives: 1) the demonstration of the existence of a cold accretion disc in low activity BHs; 2) to confirm the jet-base origin as the source of the nuclear gas ionisation in low activity BHs. Goals 1 and 2 follow on our expertise on PARSEC-scale SEDs of powerful- and low-activity- BHs and the time-simultaneous Cycle 1 JWST/NIR-MIRI and ALMA Cycle 9/bands 4 - 9 observations granted to this team for our PARSEC sample of prototype low activity BHs; 3) completion and testing of the high-level software of FRIDA; 4) follow up of our PARSEC science outreach activities.
Financial support is requested for: a postdoc 2.5 years to support goals 1 and 2; a software engineer - 1 year - to support goal 3. Travel funding to cover the attendance to scientific conferences related with goals 1 and 2, and the Jornadas Astronomicas de Almeria (goal 4), are requested. and TOTAL: 186000 E (contracts), 14000 E (travel) = 200000
