  • ETHOS 1: a high-latitude planetary nebula with jets forged by a post-common-envelope binary central star
We report on the discovery of ETHOS 1 (PN G068.1+11.0), the first spectroscopically confirmed planetary nebula (PN) from a survey of the SuperCOSMOS Science Archive for high-latitude PNe. ETHOS 1 stands out as one of the few PNe to have both polar outflows (jets) travelling at 120 ± 10 km s-1 and a close binary central star. The light curve

  • Dynamical Structure of the Molecular Interstellar Medium in an Extremely Bright, Multiply Lensed z ~= 3 Submillimeter Galaxy Discovered with Herschel
We report the detection of CO(J = 5 → 4), CO(J = 3 → 2), and CO(J = 1 → 0) emission in the strongly lensed, Herschel/SPIRE-selected submillimeter galaxy (SMG) HERMES J105751.1+573027 at z = 2.9574 ± 0.0001, using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, and the Green Bank Telescope. • Do Neutron stars Or Black Holes Dominate The X-ray Binary Population Of The Youngest Starburst Galaxies?
We report on our year-long (2009-'10) campaign with the Chandra X-ray observatory, to capture the transient X-ray binary (XRB) population in the nearby starburst galaxy IC10 in Cassiopeia. Together with archival data, the study includes 225 ksec of Chandra exposure for a limiting luminosity depth of logLX>35 sensitive to high-mass XRBs containing

  • Discovery of a Multiply Lensed Submillimeter Galaxy in Early HerMES Herschel/SPIRE Data
We report the discovery of a bright (f(250 μm)>400 mJy), multiply lensed submillimeter galaxy HERMES J105751.1+573027 in Herschel/SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase data from the HerMES project. Interferometric 880 μm Submillimeter Array observations resolve at least four images with a large separation of ~9''. A high-resolution adaptive optics Kp

  • Discovery of 1 Hz quasi-periodic oscillations in an RXTE observation of MAXI J1543-564
We report on an RXTE follow-up observation of the ongoing outburst of the newly discovered transient X-ray source MAXI J1543-564 (ATELs #3330 and #3331). At ~2:08 UT on May 10th, 2011, RXTE observed MAXI J1543-564 for about 800 seconds (only PCU2 was active). The 2-60 keV power spectrum of this observation exhibits only a single ~10 sigma quasi

  • Deep Impact, Stardust-NExT and the behavior of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 from 1997 to 2010
We present observational data for Comet 9P/Tempel 1 taken from 1997 through 2010 in an international collaboration in support of the Deep Impact and Stardust-NExT missions. The data were obtained to characterize the nucleus prior to the Deep Impact 2005 encounter, and to enable us to understand the rotation state in order to make a time of arrival
