  • Upper Limits on a Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has performed a third science run with much improved sensitivities of all three interferometers. We present an analysis of approximately 200 hours of data acquired during this run, used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We place upper bounds on the energy

  • The rapid fading of V1647 Orionis: the sudden end of a FUor-type eruption?
The young eruptive star V1647 Ori started a rapid fading in October 2005 and now is only 1 mag above the pre-outburst level. Colour changes indicate that the fading is not due to increasing extinction.

  • The importance of Scientific literacy in our Society
Scientific literacy in our society has entered a period of serious decline. Contrary to our perception, the interest of lay people for the sciences has not grown in parallel with the advances that science has brought to society. Advanced communitites are starting to feel the shortage of bright scientists. In what follows I will try to examine the

  • The chemistry of planetary nebulae and HII regions in the dwarf galaxies Sextans A and B from deep VLT spectra
Spectroscopic observations obtained with the VLT of one planetary nebula (PN) in Sextans A and of five PNe in Sextans A and of several H ii regions in these two dwarf irregular galaxies are presented. The extended spectral coverage, from 320.0 to 1000.0 nm, and the large telescope aperture allowed us to detect a number of emission lines, covering

  • Stokes diagnostics of simulations of magnetoconvection of mixed-polarity quiet-Sun regions
Realistic solar magneto-convection simulations including the photospheric layers are used to study the polarization of the Fe i Zeeman-sensitive spectral lines at 6301.5, 6302.5, 15 648 and 15 652 Å. The Stokes spectra are synthesized in a series of snapshots with a mixed-polarity magnetic field whose average unsigned strength varies from B > = 10
