  • An Imaging Survey of Early-Type Barred Galaxies
This paper presents the results of a high-resolution imaging survey, using both ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope images, of a complete sample of nearby barred S0-Sa galaxies in the field, with a particular emphasis on identifying and measuring central structures within the bars: secondary bars, inner disks, nuclear rings and spirals, and off

  • An Efficient Low-Resolution NIR Classification Scheme for M, L, and T dwarfs and Its Application to Young BDs
We present the preliminary results of a programme aimed at defining a low-resolution near-infrared spectral classification scheme for faint M, L, and T-dwarfs. The method is based on the global shape of R˜100 complete near-infrared spectra from 0.8 to 2.4μm as obtained through a high-throughput prism-based optical element, the Amici device, mounted

  • A Search for Brown Dwarfs in the Alpha Persei Cluster
We present preliminary results from a deep near-infrared survey of a ˜ 1 square degree area in the young open cluster Alpha Persei using the wide-field Omega-Prime camera on the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope, yielding a list of new low-mass cluster members, including brown dwarf candidates.

  • A photometric method to determine supermassive black hole masses
We report the discovery of a strong correlation between the shape of a bulge's light-profile and the mass of its central supermassive black hole (Mbh). We find that log(Mbh/Msun) = 2.91(+/-0.38)log(n) + 6.37(+/-0.21), where n is the Sérsic r1/n shape index. This correlation is shown to be at least as strong as the relationship between the logarithm

  • A New spectral stellar library for population synthesis
A new spectral stellar library designed to be included in population synthesis models is presented. The library, which has been obtained at the INT 2.5 m telescope (La Palma) comprises ~ 1100 stars and covers the spectral range lambda lambda 3500-7500.
