  • Results of the digital co-addition of thirteen Schmidt films of the Virgo cluster of galaxies
    We have digitally co-added APM scans of 13 Kodak TechPan films of the SE region of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. The ~ 6.2degr x 6.2degr field of the R-band films combined with the resolution of ~ 2 arcsec pixel(-1) results in data file sizes of about 222 MBytes. The 13 scanned films have been aligned, co-added, corrected for vignetting effects

  • Retrieval of solar magnetic fields from high-spatial resolution filtergraph data: the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment (IMaX)
    Context. The design of modern instruments does not only imply thorough studies of instrumental effects but also a good understanding of the scientific analysis planned for the data. Aims: We investigate the reliability of Milne-Eddington (ME) inversions of high-resolution magnetograph measurements such as those to be obtained with the Imaging

  • Revisiting the Hubble sequence in the SDSS DR7
    We present an automated morphological classification in 4 types (E, S0, Sab, Scd) of ˜ 700,000 galaxies from the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic sample based on support vector machines. The main new property of the classification is that we associate a probability to each galaxy of being in the four morphological classes instead of assigning a single class

  • Rise of the Titans: A Dusty, Hyper-luminous “870 μm Riser” Galaxy at z ∼ 6
    We report the detection of ADFS-27, a dusty, starbursting major merger at a redshift of z = 5.655, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). ADFS-27 was selected from Herschel/Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) and APEX/LABOCA data as an extremely red “870 μm riser” (i.e., {S}250μ {{m}} {S}350μ {{m}} {S}500μ {{m}

  • ROMANS IN THE NEAR EAST: THE ORIENTATION OF ROMAN SETTLEMENTS IN PRESENT-DAY JORDAN
    An essential difference between the western and eastern provinces of the Roman Empire is the fact that sophisticated urban cultures had developed in Asia Minor and the Levant centuries before the Romans arrived. Underlying the Hellenized, and later Roman, veneer was a myriad of older local traditions and languages, which had an immense impact upon

  • Rotation rates, sizes and star formation efficiencies of a representative population of simulated disc galaxies
    We examine the rotation rates, sizes and star formation (SF) efficiencies of a representative population of simulated disc galaxies extracted from the Galaxies-Intergalactic Medium Interaction Calculation (GIMIC) suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. These simulations include efficient, but energetically feasible supernova feedback, but
