  • NGC 985 - Interactions and the origin of AGNs
Observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 985 have revealed large-scale extended ionized zones, covering a large fraction of the ring-shaped structure of this galaxy. These ionized regions are a major contributor to the total far-infrared emission of this object. An interaction driven starburst is proposed to explain the main features of this galaxy.

  • New windows to the universe; Proceedings of the Eleventh IAU European Regional Astronomy Meeting, Universidad de La Laguna, Spain, July 3-8, 1989. Part III
Topics discussed in this issue include active galaxies and cosmology, interstellar and intergalactic medium, and astronomical instrumentation. Papers are presented on modeling rich clusters of galaxies, optical variability of NGC 7469 in 1967-1987, the structure of the broad line region in Fairall 9, the resolution of the compact core of quasars

  • New insights into a familiar friend - CO J = 2-1 mapping of the bipolar outflow source NGC 1333 (HH 7-11)
The bipolar outflow source NGC 1333 (HH 7-11) was observed in the J = 2-1 transition of (C-12)O, and evidence was found for a strong westerly termination of the red outflow lobe at a velocity V(lsr) about 27 km/s, together with maximal mean red-flow velocities Delta v centered upon both the driving source SVS 13 and the westerly limit of the

  • High-velocity outflows in post-Main-Sequence nebulae
Observations of three post-Main-Sequence nebulae, taken with an intermediate dispersion spectrograph mounted on the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (La Palma, Spain), are presented. The results reveal evidence for high-velocity outflows of about 100 km/s in the primary shells, and very much greater velocities in the cores, while in one unique source

  • High-resolution observations of interstellar NA I and K I absorptions towards giants within 200 PC from the sun
The first results of a program of observations designed to probe the structure and kinematics of the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) using the Queen's University of Belfast Echelle Spectrograph (QUBES) on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope are reported. The observations show the potential of the instrument for measuring small column densities

  • Fibre optics at the 4.2 M telescope (WHT)
The experimental fiber-optic spectrograph FLEX being developed for the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at Tenerife is briefly described and illustrated with a drawing. FLEX is designed to serve as an interim general-purpose spectrograph on the WHT before ISIS becomes operational and as a testbed for future instruments. Essentially, the UNIT
