  • Experimental measurement of the quality factor of a Fabry-Pérot open-cavity axion haloscope
The axion is a hypothetical boson arising from the most natural solution to the problem of charge and parity symmetry in the strong nuclear force. Moreover, this pseudoscalar emerges as a dark matter candidate in a parameter space extending several decades in mass. The Dark-photons & Axion-Like particles Interferometer (DALI) is a proposal to

  • ExoMol line lists - LI. Molecular line lists for lithium hydroxide (LiOH)
New molecular line lists for lithium hydroxide ( 6Li 16O 1H and 7Li 16O 1H isotopologues) covering wavelengths λ > 1 $\mu$m (0-10 000 cm -1 range) are presented. Each line list contains around 300 million transitions between rotation-vibration energy levels with total angular momentum up to J = 95, applicable for temperatures up to T ≈ 3500 K. Line

  • Evidence for a black hole in the historical X-ray transient A 1524-61 (= KY TrA)
We present Very Large Telescope spectroscopy, high-resolution imaging, and time-resolved photometry of KY TrA, the optical counterpart to the X-ray binary A 1524-61. We perform a refined astrometry of the field, yielding improved coordinates for KY TrA and the field star interloper of similar optical brightness that we locate 0.64 ± 0.04 arcsec SE

  • Evaluation of a Magnetic Field Inversion Method Using Only Stokes I
We compare a method for inferring the photospheric vector magnetic field using only spectroscopy to a conventional method based on polarimetry. The magnetic field strength B and inclination angle can be inferred from the Zeeman splitting using only Stokes I. We applied this method to a sunspot observed with the Vacuum Tower Telescope and compared

  • EUSO-SPB1 mission and science
The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic

  • Euclid preparation. XXXIII. Characterization of convolutional neural networks for the identification of galaxy-galaxy strong-lensing events
Forthcoming imaging surveys will increase the number of known galaxy-scale strong lenses by several orders of magnitude. For this to happen, images of billions of galaxies will have to be inspected to identify potential candidates. In this context, deep-learning techniques are particularly suitable for finding patterns in large data sets, and
