  • Optical spectroscopy of isolated planetary mass objects in the σ Orionis cluster
We have obtained low resolution optical spectra of 15 isolated planetary mass objects (IPMOs) in the sigma Orionis cluster, and derived spectral types by comparison with nearby M and L dwarfs. The spectral types are in the range late M - mid L, in agreement with our expectations based on colors and magnitudes for bona fide members. Therefore, most

  • Optical and radio variability of the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+16: A possible 5-6 year periodicity
The BL Lacertae object AO 0235+16 is well known for its extreme optical and radio variability. New optical and radio data have been collected in the last four years by a wide international collaboration, which confirm the intense activity of this source: on the long term, overall variations of 5mag in the R band and up to a factor 18 in the radio

  • Optical and Near-Infrared Calibration of AGN Field Stars: An All-Sky Network of Faint Stars Calibrated on the Landolt System
We present a total of 12,436 photometric measures of 371 field stars of 26 quasars in the visible (UBVRI) and 22,276 photometric measures of 122 field stars of 13 quasars in the near-infrared (JHK), giving a total of 34,712 measures. Of these, 115 stars in 12 fields are calibrated in both ranges. One further field, Mrk 421, was calibrated, but on

  • On the relation between the IR continuum and the active galactic nucleus in Seyfert galaxies
A sample of the brightest known Seyfert galaxies from the CfA sample is analyzed on the basis of ISO photometric and spectroscopic data. Regardless of the Seyfert type, the mid-IR continuum emission from these galaxies is found to be correlated with the coronal line emission arising in the nuclear active region. Conversely, the correlation degrades

  • On the Metallicity of Star-forming Dwarf Galaxies
We construct three extremely different scenarios of the star formation histories applicable to a sample of dwarf galaxies, based on either their present metallicity or their luminosity. The three possible scenarios imply different mechanical energy input rates, and these we compare with the theoretical lower limits established for the ejection of

  • Observation of Convective Collapse and Upward-moving Shocks in the Quiet Sun
We present spectropolarimetric evidence of convective collapse and destruction of magnetic flux by upward-moving fronts in the quiet Sun. The observational material consists of time series of the full Stokes vector of two infrared spectral lines emerging from regions associated with Ca II K network points. The amplitude of the circular polarization
