  • Infrared Spectroscopy of Low-mass X-ray Binaries
Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained 2.00--2.45 mu m infrared spectra of a number of low-mass X-ray binaries including Sco X-1, Sco X-2, and GX13+1. Sco X-1 shows emission lines only, supporting our previous conclusion that the spectral type of the evolved secondary must be earlier than G5. Emission lines are also seen in the spectrum of Sco X-2

  • Imaging and Spectrophotometry of Markarian 1094: Implications for the Recent Star Formation
Narrowband Hα imaging and intermediate- and high-resolution optical spectrophotometry have been obtained for the blue compact dwarf Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mrk 1094. The galaxy presents a bar-shaped structure and is currently undergoing a strong star formation burst distributed in several spatially separated knots. Analysis of the properties of the

  • HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE Observations of the Local Group Dwarf Galaxy Leo I
We present deep HST F555W (V) and F814W (I) observations of a central field in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The resulting color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches I~=26 and reveals the oldest ~=10-15 Gyr old turnoffs. Nevertheless, a horizontal branch is not obvious in the CMD. Given the low metallicity of the galaxy, this

  • Differential atmospheric refraction in integral-field spectroscopy: Effects and correction. Atmospheric refraction in IFS
The basic concepts for determining the effect of differential atmospheric refraction on integral-field (two-dimensional) spectroscopic observations are presented, and a method for correcting the spectra from this effect is given. The method is demonstrated with real data.

  • Dependence of the photospheric vertical flow characteristics on the granule dimension
The first high spectral resolution and white-light images obtained at the THEMIS telescope with the Italian Panoramic Monochromator (IPM), are analyzed to study intensity and velocity fluctuations in the photosphere of the sun. Monochromatic images, in two spectral ranges around 538.03 nm (C I line) and 557.61 nm (Fe I line), are used to
