  • High Dense Gas Fraction in Intensely Star-forming Dusty Galaxies
We present ALMA J=3{--}2 and VLA J=1{--}0 observations of the dense molecular gas tracers HCN, HCO+, and HNC in two lensed, high-redshift starbursts selected from the Herschel-ATLAS survey: H-ATLAS J090740.0‑004200 (SDP.9, {z}{spec}=1.575) and H-ATLAS J091043.1‑000321 (SDP.11, {z}{spec}=1.786). In SDP.9 we have detected all J=3{--}2 transitions and

  • High precision velocity observations of Arcturus using the 7699 A line of potassium
The K giant Arcturus (alpha Boo) was observed with the Birmingham double magneto-optical filter spectrometer using the GHRIL facility at the Nasmyth focus of the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope of the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in 1988 April to May. Approximately 80 hr of data were obtained over a 2 week interval. Analysis of the data

  • High resolution H i imaging of VIRGOHI 21 - a dark galaxy in the Virgo Cluster
Dark Matter supposedly dominates the extragalactic Universe, yet no totally dark structure of galactic proportions has ever been convincingly identified. Minchin et al. (2005) suggested that VIRGOHI 21, a 21-cm source found in the Virgo Cluster by Davies et al. (2004), was probably such a dark galaxy because of its broad line-width ( ˜ 200 km s-1)

  • High Velocity Gas Outflows from H II regions in Disc Galaxies
We analyze the Hα emission line profiles of the HII region populations in three disc spiral galaxies and find evidence of wing features at 40-90 km/s from the central peak in a significant fraction of regions. We explain the wing features as due to a shell expanding inside the HII region, quantify the energy involved and present two possible

  • High-Resolution Calibration of the SDSS/SEGUE Spectroscopic Analysis Pipeline
We present a discussion of efforts to obtain external validation of the estimated atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) obtained from medium-resolution (R = 2000) SDSS spectroscopy and ugriz photometry, which are being employed for both the completed SDSS-I and the ongoing SEGUE survey. The SDSS/SEGUE spectroscopic pipeline makes use of a

  • High-resolution Ground-based European Solar Physics
This communication reviews some of the most challenging topics in high-resolution ground-based Solar Physics. The most powerful European facilities are described, together with their capabilities and skills gained in Europe using them. The reasons for a large-aperture solar telescope are outlined, based on present scientific needs, which have led
