  • Supernova 2014J at M82 - II. Direct analysis of a middle-class Type Ia supernova
We analyse a time series of optical spectra of SN 2014J from almost two weeks prior to maximum to nearly four months after maximum. We perform our analysis using the SYNOW code, which is well suited to track the distribution of the ions with velocity in the ejecta. We show that almost all of the spectral features during the entire epoch can be

  • Supersonic Continuation of the Evershed Flow Outside a Sunspot as Observed with Hinode
We report on the discovery of mostly horizontal field channels just outside sunspot penumbrae (in the so-called "moat" region) that are seen to sustain supersonic flows (line-of-sight component of 6 km s-1). The spectral signature of these supersonic flows corresponds to circular polarization profiles with an additional, satellite, third lobe of

  • Superstatistical turbulence model
Recently there has been some progress in modeling the statistical properties of turbulent flows using simple superstatistical models. Here we briefly review the concept of superstatistics in turbulence. In particular, we discuss a superstatistical extension of the Sawford model and compare with experimental data.

  • Surface Characteristics of Comet-Asteroid Transition Objects 944 Hidalgo and 162P/Siding Spring (2004 TU12)
We present initial results from infrared and visible observations of two comet-asteroid transition objects. 944 Hidalgo is one of the asteroids most likely to be an extinct or dormant comet. Comet 162P/Siding Spring (henceforth 162P), displayed intermittent cometary activity shortly after discovery in late 2004. This comet is the third inner solar
