  • The ACS LCID Project. III. The Star Formation History of the Cetus dSph Galaxy: A Post-reionization Fossil
We use deep HST/ACS observations to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the Cetus dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. Our photometry reaches below the oldest main-sequence turnoffs, which allows us to estimate the age and duration of the main episode of star formation in Cetus. This is well approximated by a single episode that peaked roughly

  • The ACS LCID Project: RR Lyrae Stars and Cepheids in Local Group Galaxies
We present results of the search for variable stars in a sample of Local Group isolated dwarf galaxies, namely LGS3, IC1613, Cetus, and Tucana, based on very deep HST/ACS data. About 900 variables and candidates have been found in total. Among the confirmed variables, we identified about 700 RR Lyrae stars, 60 Cepheids, and 50 eclipsing binaries

  • The ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters: M54 and Young Populations in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
As part of the ACS Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, we present new Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the massive globular cluster M54 (NGC 6715) and the superposed core of the tidally disrupted Sagittarius (Sgr) dSph galaxy. Our deep (F606W ~ 26.5), high-precision photometry yields an unprecedentedly detailed color-magnitude diagram showing

  • The Adequacy of Stellar Evolution Models for the Interpretation of the Color-Magnitude Diagrams of Resolved Stellar Populations
Most of what we know about the stellar population of nearby, resolved galaxies comes from the interpretation of their color-magnitude diagrams, by comparison with stellar evolutionary models. We review how well current stellar evolution models reproduce the properties of simple stellar populations. Emphasis is given to the regions of the color

  • The Afterglows of Swift-era Gamma-ray Bursts. I. Comparing pre-Swift and Swift-era Long/Soft (Type II) GRB Optical Afterglows
We have gathered optical photometry data from the literature on a large sample of Swift-era gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows including GRBs up to 2009 September, for a total of 76 GRBs, and present an additional three pre-Swift GRBs not included in an earlier sample. Furthermore, we publish 840 additional new photometry data points on a total of 42

  • The AG Carinae nebula: abundant evidence for a red supergiant progenitor?
AG Carinae is a massive, evolved supergiant which is thought to be in transition from an O star to a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star and is currently identified as a luminous blue variable (LBV) with logL/solar=6.0. We present an abundance study of the ejecta nebula surrounding AG Car with the aim of elucidating the evolutionary history of the central star
