  • The balloon-borne large-aperture submillimeter telescope for polarimetry-BLASTPol: performance and results from the 2010 Antarctic flight
The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol) is a suborbital mapping experiment designed to study the role played by magnetic fields in the star formation process. BLASTPol uses a total power instrument and an achromatic half-wave plate to modulate the polarization signal. During its first flight from

  • The built-up of the red sequence in the Hercules cluster
We present the study of the colour-magnitude diagram of the cluster Abell 2151 (A 2151), with a particular focus on the low-mass end. The deep spectroscopy with AF2/WYFFOS@WHT and the caustic method enable us to obtain 360 members within 1.3 R200 and absolute magnitude M_r ≲ M_r^{ast }+6. This nearby cluster shows a well defined red sequence up to

  • The CALIFA survey across the Hubble sequence. Spatially resolved stellar population properties in galaxies
Various different physical processes contribute to the star formation and stellar mass assembly histories of galaxies. One important approach to understanding the significance of these different processes on galaxy evolution is the study of the stellar population content of today's galaxies in a spatially resolved manner. The aim of this paper is

  • The Canarias Einstein ring: a newly discovered optical Einstein ring
We report the discovery of an optical Einstein ring in the Sculptor constellation, IAC J010127-334319, in the vicinity of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. It is an almost complete ring (˜300°) with a diameter of ˜4.5 arcsec. The discovery was made serendipitously from inspecting Dark Energy Camera (DECam) archive imaging data. Confirmation of

  • The Carina Project. VI. The Helium-burning Variable Stars
We present new optical (BVI) time-series data for the evolved variable stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The quality of the data and the observing strategy allowed us to identify 14 new variable stars. Eight out of the 14 are RR Lyrae (RRL) stars, 4 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs), and 2 are geometrical variables. Comparison of the period
