Descripción
Near infrared monitoring taken with the 1.5 m Carlos Sanchez Telescope
in Tenerife of the decline of 3C279 during its 1988 outburst is
presented. These data are combined with visible monitoring and data from
the literature to examine the behavior of the light curve from B to K. A
maximum in the infrared light curve was observed in June 1989 which was
comparable at maximum to that seen in 1988. The 1988-89 outburst thus
resembles closely that of 1936. Only weak evidence is seen of a
correlation between (B - V) and m(V). Stronger correlations are observed
between the measured infrared color indices and between the infrared
brightness and color. The infrared continuum reddens as 3C279 fades, in
agreement with behavior of the optical continuum of other Optically
Violent Variables.
