  • Sodium-Oxygen Anticorrelation and Neutron-capture Elements in Omega Centauri Stellar Populations
Omega Centauri is no longer the only globular cluster known to contain multiple stellar populations, yet it remains the most puzzling. Due to the extreme way in which the multiple stellar population phenomenon manifests in this cluster, it has been suggested that it may be the remnant of a larger stellar system. In this work, we present a

  • Shock-Induced Polarized Hydrogen Emission Lines in Omicron Ceti
We have performed a spectropolarimetric survey of the variable Mira star omicron Ceti along three pulsation cycles. We present those new data collected with the Narval instrument mounted on the Telescope Bernard Lyot (TBL) in Pic du Midi, France. We have detected time variable polarimetric signatures (on QUV Stokes spectra) associated with Balmer

  • Scattering Polarization and the Hanle Effect in Hα as a Probe of Chromospheric Magnetism: Modeling vs. Observations
The Hanle effect in strong spectral lines is the physical mechanism that should be increasingly exploited for quantitative explorations of the magnetism of the quiet solar chromospheric plasma. Here we show, by means of multilevel radiative transfer calculations and new spectropolarimetric observations, that the amplitude and shape of the

  • RXTE observations strengthen the similarities between the black hole candidates IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105.
We report on the RXTE follow up observations of the black hole candidate IGR J17091-3624 (ATEL #3144, #3159, #3167, #3203) after the report of mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO -- ATEL #3225) and 'heartbeat' oscillations similar to those of GRS 1915+105 (ATEL #3230). The 'heartbeat' oscillations first seen on March 19th (ATEL #3230) at ~25 mHz

  • Properties of the H II Region Populations of M51 and NGC 4449 from Hα Images with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope
We have used images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope in Hα, and in the neighboring continuum, to produce flux-calibrated images of the large spiral galaxy M51 and the dwarf irregular NGC 4449. From these images, we have derived the absolute luminosities in Hα, the areas, and the positions with respect to the

  • Polarized Radiative Transfer: from Solar Applications to Laboratory Experiments
The theory of radiative transfer for polarized radiation, developed from Quantum Electrodynamics for the interpretation of solar observations, predicts the existence of a variety of physical phenomena that, in many cases, would deserve being directly tested through laboratory experiments, also in view of possible practical applications. In this
