  • The Earthshine Spectrum
Since 1998 the Earthshine Project has been a collaborative effort between Big Bear Solar Observatory/New Jersey Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology. Cyclic spectroscopic observations of the dark and bright sides of the moon (or earthshine and moonshine respectively) have been carried out in the visible range at

  • The Earthshine Project: Measuring the earth's albedo. Latest results
Since December 1998, photometric observations of the bright and dark side of the Moon have been regularly carried out at Big Bear Solar Observatory, with the aim of determining a precise and absolutely calibrated global albedo of the Earth. The up-to-date synoptic, seasonal and long term variation in the Earth's albedo are reported in this paper

  • Stellar content of NGC 404 - The nearest S0 Galaxy
We report V -band and I -band CCD stellar and surface photometry of the galaxy NGC 404 , taken with HST WFPC2 and the 2.5 m Nordic telescope. The colour-magnitude diagram for the stars in this galaxy is typical of that of spheroidal systems (i.e. it lacks luminous, young stars but contains a large number of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and Red

  • Spectroscopic identification of the infrared counterpart to GX5-1
Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained a 1.95-2.45 μm infrared (IR) spectrum of the primary candidate counterpart to the bright Z LMXB GX5-1. IR photometry by Naylor, Charles & Longmore and the astrometry of Jonker et al. had previously identified this star as the most likely counterpart to GX5-1. The spectrum presented here clearly shows Brackett γ
