  • The Distribution of Disks in the μ0-log h Plane and the Inclination Correction
A further fundamental modification needs to be made to the Freeman (1970) law, such that not only do LSB galaxies possess fainter central surface brightnesses than the canonical Freeman value, but the upper limit is in fact an upper (bright) `envelope' of points in the central disk surface-brightness - log(scale-length) diagram, with slope ~2.

  • The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project
The Century Survey is a photometric survey strip from which we select blue stars to probe the Milky Way halo. We obtain S/N=30 spectra for every star with (V-R)

  • The alpha -element abundances in the most oxygen-poor planetary nebula PNG 135.9+55.9
We present extensive new spectroscopy and imaging of PNG 135.9+55.9. We use these data as constraints to photoionization models to derive limits on the oxygen abundance. We find that PNG 135.9+55.9 has an oxygen abundance less than 1/50 of the solar value. Our models favour a value of 12 + log O/H between 5.8 and 6.5 dex, confirming that PNG 135.9

  • Structure and Evolution of Disk Galaxies in the GOODS Fields
Non-axisymmetric features (such as bars and spirals) as well as general triaxialities (such as those of the bulge and halo) drive the dynamical and secular evolution of disk galaxies by exerting gravitational torques which redistribute mass and angular momentum. While most (> 70 %) spirals are barred in the local Universe, early studies of the HDF

  • Spectroscopic Identification of the Infrared Counterpart to GX5-1
Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained a 1.95-2.45 micron infrared spectrum of the primary candidate counterpart to the bright Z low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX5-1. IR photometry by Naylor, Charles, & Longmore (1992) and the astrometry of Jonker et al. (2000) had previously identified this star as the most likely counterpart to GX5-1. The spectrum

  • Slow rupture of an aseismic fault in a seismogenic region of Central Italy
Slow earthquakes and afterslips prove that the Earth does not have just two response time scales, i.e. that of tectonic loading and that of regular earthquakes. A swarm of slow earthquakes, with time constants of the order of hundreds of seconds, has been detected by a laser interferometer below the Gran Sasso massif (Italy). We analyse and model
