  • Gradients of excitation in the nuclei of starburst galaxies
The use of long-slit spectroscopy at high spectral and spatial resolution has made it possible to measure gradients of gaseous excitation and also velocity fields in a sample of four bright nuclear starburst galaxies selected from the sample of Balzano (1983). Variations are found not only in the intensity but also in the quality of the emission

  • Extended ionized emission from Seyfert galaxies
Preliminary results of a program aimed at investigating the presence of H II regions around Seyfert nuclei are presented. Extended zones of ionized gas have been detected around some classical Seyfert galaxies. It is thought that the ionizing mechanism in these extended regions is UV radiation from young stars formed in a recent burst of star

  • Evolutionary phenomena in galaxies; Summer School, Puerto de la Cruz, Spain, July 4-15, 1988, Contributed Papers
Topics discussed in this symposium are on the Galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds, elliptical galaxies, the structure of spirals and galaxy interactions, and the gas and star formation in galaxies. Papers are presented on the Galactic evolution and the star counts in the Galaxy, the physical parameters of reflection nebulae in the Galaxy, chemical

  • Determination of the absolute flux from VEGA at 2.250 microns
A measurement of the absolute flux from Vega at wavelength of 2.250 microns by comparison with a standard source is presented. The result is 3.86 10 to the -10 W/sq m micron, with a probable error of 4 percent, in fair agreement with other determinations made by this method.

  • Constraints on theories of galaxy formation from measurements of fluctuations in the CMB
Current observational constraints on anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and on the clustering of galaxies have considerably narrowed the range of acceptable models for galaxy formation. Observations of these anisotropies on intermediate and large angular scales provide the best constraint on the amplitude of very long wavelength
