A brief review is presented of infrared astronomical instrumentation which has been proposed or accepted for observations from space platforms. Some stress is placed on cryogenic design problems which have hitherto formed barriers to progress. Technical solutions to problems are outlined, and steps in implementing some of them are described.

Infrared photometric observations (1.25-10 microns) of the compact H II region G45.5 plus 0.1 are reported. Key scientific questions about IO, Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa are posed and the measurements and instruments required for a Galilean satellite lander in the 1980's are described.
